It was a crazy May!! I took a vacation and am now getting back to catching up on a bunch of manga and starting some novels that I have been putting off. I finished a couple really fun manga volumes! Vol 4 of the World’s Strongest Rearguard finally released after forever, so I got to catch up on Arihito and the rest of the team. The story got super interesting too so I’m looking forward to the next release. Lots of action in this one.
But one I was really interested in starting was Chainsaw Man. The anime is coming out later this year and I wanted to get a jump start on the series! I’m still reserving judgement because I only got vol 1, but I understand why it’s popular. I just am meh about the women obsession, which I know, I know, it’s part of the whole genre but it just gets old considering this character has…a lot going on and the world also has a lot going on. I prefer more intelligent shonen characters but again….this is just vol 1 and I’m sure the series progresses hopefully with a bit more to the main character. The fight scenes are going to be EPIC though, since MAPPA is doing the anime — totally will watch. I feel like this is going to have the same feels for me as when I started Goblin Slayer (anime) and didn’t know how brutal the content is. I loved the series once it got going, but the way women are treated, animated, displayed, etc is always a turn off. Chainsaw Man is not in the same class and it looks like the women are very powerful, but I am meh on how the women are depicted so far. I’m a woman, I like to see other women not all manipulative and the men obsessed with them. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the WHY, I’m just not excited that this is how the story is going.
Probably my favorite of the recent batch I’ve read so far was “I want to be a Wall” vol 1. I LOVED it! It was so wholesome. I’m probably in a more wholesome mood overall haha. This is a story about a very atypical couple (the girl is ace and the guy is gay), but I like that it’s questioning expectations and how we tend to treat one another when it comes to romantic entanglements and what is “normal”. This volume was mostly just the backstories to the two characters and some hilariously cute moments. Yes, the premise is that these two get married to each other, but honestly they are the cutest bffs and I’m enjoying watching the journey they are on to support one another in a world that sees them as other and how they help each other not be alone. It’s super wholesome, so if you need a manage that’s going to be a hug, this is an adorable one. It reminds me of how wholesome the anime Komi Can’t Communicate is, haha.
I actually have a huge stack of manga to read — I’m picking up Akatsuki no Yona ( I LOOOOOVE this anime), Noragami (also a guilty pleasure), I’ve actually read the third vol of My Love Mix-up (had me LOLLLLL so much) and sewriously, I need to read my issues of Solo Leveling, Hazure Skill and I haven’t even written about the cute shoujo fantasy series that I finished and am mad I finished because they were only 3 or 4 volumes.
